Jeremy Staat (SVP Strategic Relations)

Iraqi War Veteran, United States Marine, NFL Alumni, ASU Alumni, Sun Bowl Defensive Lineman MVP and Rose Bowl Appearance

Born in Bakersfield, California, on October 10, 1976, to parents Janet and Harold Staat. As a youngster I was head strong, my philosophy growing up was “if you can do it, I can do it better,” even if it was something I didn’t want to do. This type of thinking made me a great competitor in football, track & field and in life.

At Bakersfield High School I was a four year letterman in football and three year letterman in Track in field as a thrower of the shot put & discus. Winning State titles and receiving multiple awards in both. Attending Bakersfield Junior College I played on two championship teams as well as two state titles in both shot put & discus, as well as a state title in the hammer throw. This was the first time in history that a thrower took all three events in the same year. In the spring of 1996 I was awarded a full ride scholarship to Arizona State University for football. It was here that I met Pat Tillman and we became friends.

9/11/2001, I woke to the sound of my cell phone ringing. My friend Doug was calling to tell me we were under attack. My reaction was, “Let’s get it on.” Turning on the Television I was just in time to witness the second plane smashing into the second tower. I thought to myself, “Who would be dumb enough to attack us?”. One of the biggest disappointments from the attacks on 9-11 was hearing that some of my fellow athletes were upset that the N.F.L. season was going to be a week longer because of the attacks. At this point I was ready to enlist! I spoke to Pat (Tillman) and he gave me some good advice. He told me I was too good to give up on my NFL career and that I needed to qualify for my retirement and pension....so I did. Shortly after Pat & Kevin Tillman told me they had enlisted with the Army.

In 2003, still looking for the three games I needed to qualify for my retirement I found myself signed with the St. Louis Rams. Mission accomplished! I had finally received the three games I was looking for. Soon after I retired from the NFL and began looking for the next step in life. I liked the idea that I had one retirement in the bag and I felt it necessary to work towards another. Since all I knew was football I figured the Arena Football League would be a great place to start. This took a sudden change when Pat was killed in Afghanistan. I found myself realizing once again there was more to life then a game. In 2005, with much soul searching I found a team that would never leave my side, The United States Marine Corps. A team of men and women that have joined a blood line that dates back over two hundred and thirty years. They do what they do, not for the love of money, but for the love of country!

Because of the nature of his job duties, he once again was able to wear his military uniform every day.

In 1999, Jose had the unique opportunity to go active duty. In a last minute interview he was selected as the Software Programmer/Analyst for the Personnel Division of the AZ Army National Guard Headquarters. He served in this position until April 2009 when he transferred to the AZ ARNG Recruiting and Retention Division as the Human Resources NCO. On April 29, 2009, with his wife Katrina, some close friends and colleagues, Jose was promoted to Staff Sergeant.
